Why Now?
My Mission - The Short Version. To make this website and blog the “go to” place for Oregonians and others, who are interested in learning more about real estate, the industries it impacts, and those industries that impact it.
My Mission – The Longer Version. As with all new ventures, my goals may change from time to time, depending upon my own learning curve, my readers’ appetite for new and different information, and a most valued asset, my time. I practice real estate law for a livelihood – this website and blog is a labor of love.
This site will address not only real estate basics, but – for those interested – will also include some of the more complex issues for Realtors®, lawyers, mortgage brokers and bankers, and anyone else who finds some level of fascination in learning more about this industry. It is my hope that the content of this site will assist all who choose to buy, sell, invest or broker real estate, to get it right the first time, every time.
Although it’s not an original thought, I like to say that the reason real estate is so important to people is because they’re not making any more of it. It is a source of satisfaction, disputes, and even wars.
Three Goals. I have the following three goals that I hope to achieve through this website and blog.
First and foremost, I want the website to be informative – but in a clear and understandable way. That is why I have developed a glossary of terms written in language for the layman. I want to see real estate terminology and concepts “demystified.”
I believe it important for all content on this site to be clear. C.S. Lewis said it best in his discussion on style. He felt that writers must avoid ambiguity at all costs. In his chapter entitled simply “Writing” he noted wryly:
The way for a person to develop a style is (a) to know exactly what he wants to say, and (b) to be sure he is saying exactly that. The reader, we must remember, does not start by knowing what we mean. If our words are ambiguous, our words will escape him. I sometimes think that writing is like driving sheep down a road. If there is any gate open to the left or the right, the readers will most certainly go into it. (Words to Live By, page 311)
Accordingly, my goal is to write in such a manner as to leave no confusion about what I am trying to say, honoring Mr. Lewis’ first principle that the reader “does not start by knowing what we mean.”
-
My second goal is to make the website and blog entertaining and perhaps a little irreverent. By “entertaining” I mean that from time to time I may include information, stories, and even an occasional poem, historical quote or anecdote from various sources that will (hopefully) underscore the point I am trying to make.
At times, some topics may seem totally irrelevant to the world of real estate or real estate law. While I do want the reader to stay on the right path when I’m discussing important topics, sometimes an occasional diversion, with levity or otherwise, is necessary just to maintain interest in the more serious content. Even the opera provides an intermission….
And when I say that I want this website to be a “little irreverent,” I mean that I may occasionally debunk some “urban myths” that seem so abundant today in this Wikipedia world - where everyone can be an instant expert and “knowledge” is what a group says it is.
The website and blog fully intends to ask the tough (and frequently unasked) questions and occasionally provide answers that may provoke thought, even by those who disagree.
-
My third goal is to fill a gap in the public’s real estate knowledge. With increasing litigation and regulation I believe there is a need for information in an “executive summary” fashion. This means more than just attaching a link to another website with no real explanation as to its significance for the reader.
In summary, my goal is to serve up news, facts, opinion, statistics and knowledge in “bite-size” pieces with a brief explanation to the reader as to how it may - or may not - affect them in their world; whether as an investor, seller, buyer, Realtor®, or just an interested observer to the real estate industry.
In German, the word “quelle” means “the source.” In biblical studies, academics used the letter “Q” as a shorthand reference for the word “quelle” when referring to a proposed solution for what was known as the “Synoptic Problem” - an issue that had bothered scholars for years. Hence, I decided upon the brand “Q-Law” to designate both my name and my hope - i.e. that this site will become “The Source” for reliable real estate news and information, especially for Oregonians – and those interested in becoming Oregonians.
This endeavor will take time. Q-Law will be a growing, evolving, and exciting project. Have patience.
